A bright new $2 coin has been released by the Royal Australian Mint to celebrate 30 years since the Torres Strait Islander Flag became one of Australia’s official national flags. The coin features bold colours and meaningful symbols from the flag, including the dhari (a traditional headdress) and a five-pointed star, representing culture, unity and connection to land and sea.

Designed by Mint artist Elyssa Waterford with artwork by Erub Island’s Lavinia Ketchell, the coin reflects the strength and pride of Torres Strait Islander identity. It was created in partnership with the Torres Strait Island Regional Council and is available from today (July 3) in both a collector card and a special silver edition.
