The skies above Lake Burley Griffin will light up on Saturday 15 March with Canberra’s favourite free event SKYFIRE returning thanks to Hit 104.7 and Mix 106.3.

SKYFIRE has been a beloved feature in the Canberra calendar since 1989 when FM104.7 (now Hit 104.7) first delivered the event for the people of the region. Since then, SKYFIRE has grown into a day long event which welcomes people to the focal point of our city, Lake Burley Griffin with an array of Food Trucks, Southside Markets, 2 Entertainment Hubs featuring live radio broadcasts, speakers for those who forget to bring their radios and big screens to watch the action from around the lake unfold.

In the skies above there will be a RAAF Fast Jet Handling Display by an F35 Lightning Fighter Jet before over 40,000 pyrotechnic effects, 2,500 shells and 25,000 shooting comets dazzle the expected audience of over 120,000 all to a synchronised soundtrack broadcast on both Mix 106.3 and Hit 104.7. Dragon Boat ACT will also run paddling demonstrations from 5pm.

SKYFIRE has been made possible through Hit 104.7 and Mix 106.3 partnering with 10 local businesses, Club Lime, Canberra Airport, Canberra Outlet Centre, Blumers Personal Injury Lawyers, Zango, Rivoland Tiles, Y Less 4 U, Harvey Norman, National Capital Motors, Alexander Watson Insulation and support from the ACT Government via the Major Event Fund and the National Capital Authority.

Join us on Saturday, March 15, 2025, as Lake Burley Griffin comes alive! One of Australia’s finest fireworks shows set to a 20-minute soundtrack, this iconic event promises a memorable experience for everyone.

SKYFIRE will start at 8:30pm and will run for 20-minutes.

The Skyfire 2025 soundtrack will be broadcast across both Hit 104.7 and Mix 106.3. To enjoy the fireworks synced up to the soundtrack, we encourage you to bring a portable radio and turn the volume up! Please note, if you are streaming the broadcast online (or through any apps), there will be a slight delay.

🛫 RAAF F-35A Lightning II Flyover! 🛫

At approximately 7:22pm (may change due to weather), the F-35A Lightning II will commence, finishing in a vertical afterburner climb. The F-35A Lightning II is the Australian Defence Force’s first fifth-generation air combat capability. It is a highly advanced multi-role, supersonic, stealth fighter which will meet Australia’s requirements to defeat current and emerging threats.

Getting To and From Skyfire

Additional public transport:

Free travel on all Transport Canberra bus and light rail services available from 5:00 pm until last service.
Additional shuttle buses to support the bus network from 5:00 pm (with the last bus leaving City Interchange to Regatta Point in time for the fireworks display at 8.10 pm)
Additional light rail services and increased frequency from 5:00 pm until 11:00 pm.

Changes to bus services:

The Rapid 2 will be diverted from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm due to road closures.
The Rapid 6 will be diverted from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm due to road closures.
Local service 57 will be diverted from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm due to road closures.
Local service 58 will be diverted from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm due to road closures.
Multiple bus stops will be closed within the Parliamentary Triangle.

For convenience, use ride-sharing services such as Uber and Taxis from. Ensure drop-offs are at designated public points.

If your vehicle is displaying a valid permit you will be directed through any controlled road closures to available Disabled Parking locations displayed on the Skyfire location maps.

Road Closures

From 8:00 am until 10:00 pm:
1. Parkes Way (Westbound) between Kings Avenue to Commonwealth Avenue.
2. Wendouree Drive between Constitution Avenue and Kings Avenue.

From 2:00 pm until 10:00 pm:
1. Parkes Way (Eastbound) between Coranderrk Street and Kings Avenue.

From 3:00 pm until 10:00 pm:
1. Queen Elizabeth Terrace between Parkes Place West and Parkes Place East.
2. Parkes Place West between Questacon car park and Queen Elizabeth Terrace.
3. Parkes Place East between Queen Elizabeth Terrace and King Edward Terrace.
4. King Edward Terrace between Parkes Place West and Parkes Place East.

From 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm:
1. Albert Street (both east and west)

From 8:25 pm until 9:00 pm:

1. Kings Avenue (Northbound) between King Edward Terrace and Parkes Place
2. Kings Avenue (Southbound) between Morshead Drive and Blackall Street

From 8:25 pm until 11:00 pm:
1. Commonwealth Avenue (Northbound) between Kaye Street and Vernon Circle.
2. Commonwealth Avenue (Southbound) between Vernon Circle and Queen Victoria Terrace.

Pet Safety Tips for Fireworks Season

Follow these guidelines to ensure your pets are safe and comfortable during fireworks:

Safe Spaces: Create a secure indoor area or crate for your pet.
Identification: Ensure your pet has updated microchip details and wears a collar/ID tag.
Desensitisation: Gradually expose your pet to loud noises before the event.

Lost Child Protocol

ACT Policing, along with other authorities, will distribute wristbands at Skyfire. Parents are encouraged to write their contact details on the wristbands for easy identification if a child is lost. There will be no ‘lost kid’ collection points as it would mean moving lost children further away from their family and friends.

What is Skyfire?

Since 1989, Skyfire has been Canberra’s beloved annual event, captivating audiences for over 30 years. Originally a fireworks show synchronized with FM 104.7’s soundtrack, it has evolved into a day-long spectacle around Lake Burley Griffin, attracting at least one-third of the ACT population.

Crowds gather throughout the afternoon, securing their favorite spots or discovering prime viewing locations. As evening descends, the atmosphere buzzes with excitement as people enjoy picnics or indulge in culinary delights from food trucks.

As darkness falls, the entertainment stage on the north side of the lake comes to life, with hosts from Hit 104.7 and Mix 106.3 energizing the crowd. The anticipation builds with music artists, leading up to the main event – SKYFIRE 2025! A 20-minute pyrotechnic extravaganza, launched from barges in Lake Burley Griffin’s central basin. The spectacle is enhanced by a high-energy soundtrack simulcast on Hit 104.7 and Mix 106.3 perfectly timed to the fireworks show.
