Faded to Fabulous: Canberra’s Sydney and Melbourne Buildings Are Getting a Glow-Up!
By the end of 2025, Canberra’s iconic Sydney and Melbourne buildings will be shining brighter than a fresh coat of paint—and that’s exactly what they’re getting!
These symmetrical beauties, standing tall on either side of Northbourne Avenue, were originally designed to be the city’s premier “retail traders’ block” when construction began in 1926.
But fast forward to today, and these buildings look more “retro-chic” than “retail royalty,” thanks to decades of faded, chipped, and mismatched paint.
Why the patchwork appearance? It turns out, the buildings were sold off in sections to around 100 different owners and landlords, making a unified look nearly impossible—until now.
After years of negotiations and countless stakeholder meetings, the stars have finally aligned! The Sydney and Melbourne buildings are set to get the makeover they deserve within the next 18 months.
The ACT Government has just announced $4.2 million in funding to repaint the facades, complete with 24 individual grants to help owners cover the cost of the glow-up.
So, what can we expect? Sleek new paint jobs, a cohesive look, and maybe even a few gasps of admiration from passersby.
