Learning to Fight Back at Canberra Martial Arts & Fitness!

Learning some self-defence manoeuvres has always been on my to-do list, but like all good intentions they get forgotten amongst the busyness of life, so when we got the opportunity to trial Canberra Martial Arts and Fitness I jumped at the opportunity.

When arriving at their Phillip location we were greeted by owner Tom and, mascots of the gym, his two dogs Bear and Buzz. After a few pats we made our way on to the padded floor to learn a few skills in four different styles;

Krav Maga was first up. This is the self defence system that was developed for the Israeli Army and it left me feeling pretty empowered. The move we learnt for this one was how to disarm someone coming at you with a pole or similar weapon. With a little practice this kind of self-defence would definitely make me feel safer in the world, knowing how to handle certain situations and how to get yourself out of trouble is a life skill we should all invest in.
Kummooyeh, the Korean Sword way of the sword, was next and Rod and I were both handed foam swords. Never had I considered doing a sword class but after learning some basic skills I felt like I was in an action movie taking on the bad guy and I have to admit, I liked it!
Brazilian Ju Jitsu was third and while it looks quite full on when you see it in action, when broken down into small steps I was able to take Rod down to the ground.
And finally Boxing rounded us out for our taste test of classes. Boxing is great for strength and cardio but for me it’s also a great way to release any day to day frustrations.

This was just 4 of the 51 Group Fitness and Martial Arts Class weekly offerings at Canberra Marital Arts and Fitness – proving they have something for everyone and in an environment that is fun, relaxed and cheerful (I mean when you have dogs to greet you how could it not be!)

When heading along to your class of choice make sure you also ask to see and learn the Bend and Snap! This one is useful if someone grabs your hair from behind and while it sounds cute it is powerful!
