A top stop to start your morning!
The Bakehouse in Mitchell has officially opened and it’s here to show off how bloody good it is.
Located on Lysaght Street in Mitchell, The Bakehouse is easily one of the most impressively diverse cafes and bakeries I have ever seen regarding its menu. Burgers, hot dogs, loaded croissants, a stack of creative and ambitious pies and sausage rolls, and I’ve not even gotten to their sweets and cakes yet.
I popped in the middle of a pretty standard Wednesday morning around 10:30 am and they were packed. But even more impressive than that was that I also barely had a wait time. From walking in, to ordering to getting food and coffee was both very quick and very easy as the staff were incredibly friendly and hospitable. The actual store itself was also immaculately presented, feeling very cosy and warm. Plus they have outside seating, so as winter slowly leaves Canberra and the warmer months take over, outside seating with one of their Brekkie Croissants and coffee sounds like a pretty damn good way to start a day.
Now getting to the actual food, the plan of attack was conducted on two fronts: savoury brunch options, and sweet cakes and pastries. I asked the owner Caley what the most popular item was, as well as the chef’s favourites and they did not disappoint. Caley brought out three items from their brunch menu for me to indulge in; the Brekkie Croissant, the Humdinger Burger and the Buffalo Dog.
The Brekkie Croissant was cooked to perfection with double bacon, two eggs, cheese, tomato, shallots and spicy mayo. Normally I’m not much of an egg guy, I sadly am one of the people who’ll shamefully lift his B&E roll to stealthily remove the egg. But I wanted to try it as it was and I think I like eggs now. I understand how this is one of the most popular breakfast items for people to enjoy both in-house and on the go. Crispy and smooth handmade croissants assisted the beautifully cooked eggs and bacon.
The Humdinger Burger was made with a store-made milk bun, chicken schnitzel, bacon, egg, lettuce, onion, hollandaise sauce and jalapeno relish! I love spice so I was all in on this damn national treasure of a burger right here. I split it in half and shared it with a colleague from work and after the first bite, we were both second-guessing having to share this item.
The Buffalo Hotdog was created with a store-made milk bun as well, buffalo chicken schnitzel, pickles, cheese, red onion and ranch dressing. Now if I’m being honest, I scoped the menu before walking in that day and I was hoping that this item would be one I got to try. Chicken schnitzel on a hot dog with buffalo sauce? I was mad at myself I hadn’t had the idea first cause it was beautiful, it felt like something that should’ve existed long before I had it that day. So much so that despite trying a multitude of pastries, coffees and other items I still left with a Buffalo Hotdog as I wasn’t ready to part with it.
As well as an extensive breakfast and lunch menu The Bakehouse has an incredible array of cakes and pastries that I’ll be returning for to slowly have them all! Inventive and delicious the standouts were the Vegemite and Cheese Sausage Roll, the Custard Filled Donut, the bacon brie and blackberry toastie and the Blushing Peach Mousse cake. But I’m cheekily eyeing off the chicken carbonara pie when I return this coming weekend. But they had so many options for everything I genuinely am unable to even scratch the surface of what the Bakehouse has to offer without writing a 14-page essay.
The Bakehouse in Mitchell is guaranteed to be a stand-out cafe and bakery in Canberra’s north, it’s just a matter of time. With such a wide range of options to cater to all taste buds, vegetarians and vegans, as well as many gluten-free options, The Bakehouse in Mitchell is something you’re missing out on if you don’t go.
