Chemical Peel – Facts Vs Myths

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the words chemical peel, facial, or skincare? Maybe you picture your face melting off, recall that classic Kath and Kim “facial gone wrong” episode, or honestly don’t know much at all. I’ve had a few facials before, but I always avoided chemical peels because of the scary stories I’d heard.

There are so many misconceptions about chemical peels. To clear things up, the team at Ology Canberra invited me to try one of their treatments and bust some of the myths.

Before going in, I checked their website, which has loads of information to help you figure out the right treatment for your skin (https://skinology.au/chemical-peels ). Learning that there are different types of peels eased my nerves. They stock three main brands(ASPECT, MURAD and PELACTIV) with options tailored to different skin types and goals.

The clinic itself was easy to find and very welcoming. I was greeted straight away, and my treatment was with Anabelle and Kate, who were both amazing. They answered all my questions (and I had plenty!) before we even started.

Q: What are the biggest misconceptions people have about chemical peels?
A: A lot of people think your whole face will peel off after one treatment. That’s not the case. It depends on your skin type and how strong the peel is. The peel we are using on you today, the Aspect 20%, is light and just breaks down dead skin cells. You might get a little peeling, but nothing dramatic.

Q: Why do you offer different types of peels?
A: We match peels to skin type and the results you want. We usually start with a lighter peel and build up. It all comes down to your consultation and what your skin needs.

Q: What’s the general recommendation you give to clients?
A: It really depends on your goals. Peels can be combined with other treatments for extra results. A good starting point is three treatments and see how your skin feels. From there, you can keep going for as long as you like. We always suggest coming in for a consultation first, where we go over your concerns, recommend a treatment plan, and talk about products that suit your goals.

Q: Who do you recommend chemical peels for?
A: Pretty much anyone, unless they have super sensitive skin. They’re great for dullness, fine lines, pigmentation, hydration etc. The results build over time, so it’s not an instant miracle, but you’ll notice smoother skin even after the first treatment.

Q: Does it hurt?
A: Not really. If you have sensitive skin, you might feel some discomfort, but it’s more of an itchy or tingly feeling than pain. The stronger the peel, the more intense the sensation, but it’s not unbearable. Feeling something means it’s working! The peel only stays on for about five minutes, and we can remove it earlier if you’re uncomfortable.

After Anabelle answered my questions, I felt completely at ease.

She started by double cleansing, then prepped my skin for the peel. Throughout the whole process, she explained what she was doing, how it might feel, and even what it might smell like, so I was never caught off guard.

The peel itself was quick, around five minutes. There were a couple of moments where it felt warm, but Anabelle cooled it down with a fan, which made it much more comfortable. Afterward, she applied a neutraliser, a cooling mask, and even treated me to a 10-minute

red LED mask. She finished with serums and moisturisers, and my skin felt calm and refreshed.

I was also sent home with tester sizes of the products they used and instructions on how to look after my skin for the next few days.

The results? My skin had a noticeable glow and bounce the next day. It felt smooth, and my moisturiser absorbed beautifully. The whole experience was relaxed, informative, and surprisingly easy. I went in nervous, but the team at Ology made me feel safe and cared for every step of the way. Now, I’m actually excited to explore more of their treatments.

If you’ve been curious about chemical peels but nervous about the myths, I can honestly say my experience at Ology Canberra was nothing like the scary stories. It was comfortable, quick, and left my skin feeling fresh. I’d recommend it for anyone looking to brighten their skin, tackle uneven texture, or just give themselves a self-care boost. With the right guidance from the team at Ology, you’ll feel confident knowing your skin is in good hands.
