The official design of Australia’s future coins, featuring King Charles III, was unveiled in Canberra on Thursday morning.
Previous to now, we’d only ever been shown mock designs but now the Royal Australian Mint in Deakin has released the final version of the King’s effigy – as designed by the Royal Mint in London.
The $1 coin will be the first to feature the new king, due to be released into circulation before Christmas, with other denominations to be rolled out from next year.
It’ll mark the first time a King has appeared on Aussie coins since the early 50s and the first time ever since making the switch to decimal currency.
While new coins featuring Queen Elizabeth II will cease production, they will remain legal tender and will continue in circulation for years to come.
